I have (2) fittings on top my permanent mounted fuel tank. One fitting has a hose going to the vent at the fuel cap. The other fitting is for the hose that supplies the fuel to the outboard.
The vent hose fitting is labeled "P" and the other is labeled "R". Does anyone know what the letters stand for? d1 |

Pickup and Return? Pickup being where your motor takes gas, return being a vent? Just a WAG

That would make sense, however as I described in the initial post, that is not how the hoses are currently routed. Hence, the confusion... |

I think it's the R is for Reserve. If your fuel selector switch has a reserve setting, then there is a second pickup that sits deeper in the gas tank. P for Primary....don't trust me on this one!!!

Could be... I don't have a selector switch with my setup, though.

Pull it out and check.
I'd say Primary and Reserve. Not sure why your vent is hooked to it?

Attached is a better picture of the top of tank and the fittings I am working with. You can see the "P" fitting hose connects to another fitting that has a hose that goes to the fill cap vent. Last edited by defiant0ne; 02-27-2017 at 06:02 PM. |

That makes sense. I would guess his tank doesn't actually have a primary/reserve set up, but the tank cover/fittings is standard and marked as such. In this case they instead used the extra fitting as a vent.

Most boats are set up to be used with any brand of engine. I'd bet the manufacture was just covering all there bases. Something the newer ones seem to forget about.

What the heck is the purpose of this spring hose? Attached to a plastic elbow? For reference, what you see in the picture is located under the "P" fitting. I pulled the whole assembly to install a new pickup tube and found this...
