Default Mercury SmartCraft GPS Wiring

New poster here, so don't beat me up too bad! I recently bought a new Lund with SmartCraft guages and I'm looking to connect my Garmin GPSMAP 535s to the SC system for accurate speed readings and TrollControl via speed. Has anyone done this before? Has anyone had luck connecting their SC guages to an external GPS for this purpose? It seems stragithforward, but I just can't get it to work. Any suggestions?

I don't have that configuration, but a web search keeps turning-up a recurring theme, of making sure you've enabled the GPS signal "out" on the Garmin, and selecting the GPS signal vs pitot on the SmartCraft speedo.
