I learned about it through Recycled Fish.org. I think they have some relevant info on their site somewhere but I couldn't find it. I'll look again, or send Teeg Stouffer an email. They are set up at the Ice Show in St Paul today if you wanted to go talk to him directly. I'm sure he has some of the VentaFish tools with him as well.

Here's a video from Texas Parks and Wildlife:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=pEeQrsHcwf8 Barotrauma is the official name of the condition and if you Google this you'll find lots of info on both sides of the discussion. Search fish, barotrauma, state, gov and you'll find more of the scientific studies than if you leave out the state or gov. |

I just watched that video from the Texas DNR that gn83tm posted. The video showed inserting the needle and letting out a very large amount of air. It might be alright for bass but would not recommend for walleye. We have to fizz walleye here when we release deep caught eyes, usually in late summer the thermocline is at least 40 feet and the big fish are down even deeper, and of course we have to release the slot fish on Greers Ferry. Our biologists recommend to cradle the fish with your fingers pressing slightly on its belly, it will feel firm, and let enough air out to feel the belly become slightly softer, but not let the belly cave in. Deflating the bladder to empty can cause more harm than not fizzing. Oh do, suggest clean the needle with some alcohol routinely to keep any bacteria from forming and transferring into the fish.

If you pay attention to the video it said a 14% survival rate with fizzing.
Personally I think that's not a good number. Keep or don't fish that deep ! Just me, do what ever you want ! |

Does anybody know where I could find a fizzing video specific to walleye? All the videos seem to be bass and seabass related... it would be nice to find one that showed someone doing it to a walleye.
