Perch Fillets - Black spots
I was cleaning some Perch, and noticed some of the fillets had black spots on them, generally only on 1 side of the fillet. Does anyone know what the spots are, and are the fish safe to eat ?

[font color=green size=3][b]It's generally a parasite in the flesh, it is killed when you cook it, so it's OK to eat. They become more common as summer goes on, and disapear when the water gets cold again.

these parasites are more commen in shore based fisheries.
ie. if the perch that you are catching are in shallow water, or near shore - where birds frequent - you are more liable to see these little guys. My understanding is that the birds carry the parasites and they come out with the droppings. Then, the shallow minnows work over the droppings and get pick up the parasites. Then, when the perch eat the minnows, they pick up the little critters. In general, if you fish deeper colder water for perch, the problem is much less pronounced. Take care REW p.s. I appreciate your offer to dispose of the remaining fillets. This website is frequented by a number a good people, and I am not suprised that someone would be so concerned with my well being. As a way of reciprocating, and as to not inconvienence you or your family with the aroma of those fillets in the garbage during the heat of summer, I have decided to coat them in flour, then an egg wash (with a touch of garlic), then crushed up Ritz crackers, finished up by placing them in 350 degree vegetable oil. I am confident those steps, along with some buttered new potatoes and baked beans, will lead to the proper disposal. Once again, I appreciate your "unselfish" offer. Take care.

Yep... it's the skin side that has them. I use quite a bit of black pepper anyhow...who's to know, hey?

i see em quite a bit in Lake St. Clair perch.... somedays the school you're over all have em, somedays the school you're over doesn't have em. They're fine.... actually, those black dots I believe are the body's reaction the parasite, not the living parasites. I've eaten a whole bunch of em, and 1/2 of my brain is still functional..... which is the norm for me.
In talking with fisheries people these fish are fine to eat. The ones that weird me out are the sunfish (I don't keep sunnies anymore because of this) that have the white grubs in em, those things are disgusting. Seems like if the sunnies come from lakes with a marl/muck bottom, a large percentage of the sunnies have these. Every now and again a gill from the same body of water will have em, but a LOT lower percentage. I hear they come from snails, maybe the sunnies eat more snails? i dunno. steve |
