Default Marine repair hourly rates???

Got my boat in the fix it shop for some minor repairs, water pump and lower unit seals. I was kinda shocked when I was told labor rate was $85.00/hour
That is here in Western Michigan area. What is the going rate for labor in your area. Hope I dont ever need some serious work done!!!!

I live in Ohio. The only shop that I'll let near my boat charges $97.50/hr, and they are worth every cent.

In 2005 the national average for shop labor according to Boating Industry Magazine was $75 per hour. The includes over $100 per hour on the West Coast and Northeast Coast. Some small towns still were in the $40-50 range.

In '05 the average mechanic pay was $22,000. The range was from $16,000 to $38,000. Because a majority of dealers are small Ma and Pa businesses, few boat and outboard mechanics get the benefits that other industries have. You have to keep in mind that a lot of the pay was from overtime in the summer months as it is not a year round 40 hr. per week job in most of the country. Many places lay-off their people in the winter.

National figures for a trained automotive tech specializing in driveability problems was close to $50K, plus they get generous benefits from most dealers. Check the posted hourly shop rate at your next visit to an authorized car dealer.

Shoot, auto shops are less money, even actual dealer repair shops I think. I just dropped off my truck to a small auto repair shop that was highly recommend by friends of mine and his rate was around $60.

Now go to one of your truck manufacturer's authorized dealers and see what the shop rate is.
