Default Leech Lake 6/12-6/19

My family will be staying at Stoney Point resort from June 12-19. We will be trying for walleye and northern. We had marginal success on Ottertail a couple years ago. Any advice on other
locations, baits, colors, trolling vs jigging, etc. would be greatly appreciated. I understand this is a walleye site but I would love for my son to hook into a large northern/musky. Are they catchable this time of year? If so where, on what lures, and what colors. I have heard
Uran Bay is good for pike. True???

in response to kevin powells request for leech lake info. fish up insid sucker bay with big jointed rapalas or rebels in green, chart, or an clown color combo. trol or wind drift over and around the big cabbage weed beds and you will catch pike from 1 to 8 lbs. remember the windyer the better especially if its overcast..

PULL ANYTHING BEHIND THE BOAT AND THE NORTHERN AND SMALLIES WILL BITE---

I just got done fishing the MERC Classic last week-end. There were some nice walleye taken in the 4-7 lb class. Fishing has slowed from this spring and the fish are now in transition, so check both the weeds and the mid lake humps. I might suggest hiring a local guide for 1/2 to 1 day early on in your trip. The leech lake guides assoc is a group of guides who work together and share info to improve your fishing experience. A 1 day trip (1/2 walleye and 1/2 muskie) would be worth while. The guides can be contacted thru Reeds Sporting Goods in Walker. If this isn't in you budget, try portage bay around 2 points (it's on the map) for muskie, northern and walleye. Start at around 12 ft and cast or troll for muskie and northern. The lake still needs to warm-up some before the hot action starts on muskie, but northerns should be catchable and just the site of a muskie follow would thrill your son. It still thrills me. Try a little deeper for walleye at both 2 pts and five mile point. Jigs and minnows (chart, green, white and black) are the mainstay. However, lindy rigs with shiners (or rainbows if shiners aren't available), leeches and crawlers are also starting to produce. If the fish aren't in the shallows (6-14 ft) go deep (20-30 ft). All this type of water is in the 2 points and 5 mile area. Always fish the windy side. The windier the day, the better the fishing on leech.

Good luck
