If someone were to copy the Hughes River Baits, producing a lure that was the exact same as the HRs, but without the price tag, Jim Wilson hassles, and this bait came in a good variety of fish catching patterns, would people still purchase the Hughes River Baits?

In my opinion, no. The Cobb gliders are so close to the HR, and cost half as much, and are also readily available, but they don't generate the hype that HR's do. Its unfortunate.

I think they still would to some extent. Even in the negative hype there is a buzz about his lures. No doubt they are great. Cobb's are great too and they work wonderful. So many good gliders out there now for alot less than an HR.

todd, I couldn't agrea more. Why does this bait have to cost as much as it does? The only thing expensive about it is the time he spends spraying the patterns. No doubt they are art but let those who want to collect baits buy these and go and fish with a cobb's. These baits are not that expensive and they all work. Plus they are built like a tank.
BTW, loads of great gliders out there at a lower price: zig zags, undertakers, phantoms and vipers, ... |

I think there will always be a market for higher prices lures as long as there are people willing to shell out the cash for them. Look at ebay. I'm seeing HR lures going for $60+ and also for Amma Bamma's. I bought one HR and will probably grab a Cobb's in the future. If I catch fish on them, I would probably consider other ones also.

Was looking at the Rollie and Helen's catalog, and those Cobb's look real sweet. Real close to the Hughes River. I may have to get one. $40 for a lure is too much!

Does anybody know anything about the Wades Wide Glides?? I picked one of these up at the Reed's booth at the MN Muskie Expo. They look exactly like the HR, but were easier on the wallet at $25. Looks like a great bait, but not one that you hear much about. Any comments would be appreciated.

I had a wades wide glide. As far as I could tell it's a chop bait with a wiggle. Mine had great flash but it definitely did not glide.
One thing that probably makes the HR more expensive is how he weights the lure and the time it takes. He uses more weights in the lure. 7 in some of them. |
