I'm planning to upgrade from an ancient 43/12v MinnKota AutoPilot. I'm trying to choose between 55/12v or a 65 24v AutoPilot. I would welcome comments from anyone having experience with either of these models.
There is another issue that play into the decision: (i) I'm not currently set up for 24v and I'm not sure how much it would cost me to get set up. What will likely need to be changed? Circuit boards? Wiring? Nothing? |

I don't have an autopilot but I do have the 65 powerdrive 24 volt and when it works, the boat will hold in the heavy winds easily.
The only problems that I have had, is when it rains on the pedal and you want to use it, turn left/right, it will not respond. I have had a main control board go out within a year and the pedal 3 months after that. I am currently on my second pedal ($75). I'm not sure if it's the same pedal for the PD/AP models. As far as wiring, not too much different is required. Just some 6 or 8 guage wire, a couple of 50 amp circuit breakers right off the battery, and a v-plug (male and female) and you are set. The differences between the 12 and 24 volt...you need another battery, extra weight, but you get a longer life between charges. I recently went on a 5 day trip and had plenty of juice left to battle rollers and 15mph wind on Mille Lacs. Hope some of this helps, Floydmeister |

I have a 16 footer with the 55AP 12V. I’m very happy with it. The newer motors are more efficient with the batteries than the older models. I can fish all day.

I have a 55AP-12v on a 17.5' boat with a 115 HP. It works real well, even in the wind, the only thing I've had a problem with is the foot pedal sticking every now and then. I have never run out of juice and have had some 12+ hour days. Make sure you buy a good battery and consider an on-board charger. I use a MK-20 battery.

I have the AP 65 on my Tracker pro DV17 and have been pretty happy with it. It did go in for service last winter to replace a overload switch. You will need a different mounting plate if your current trolling motor is a bow mount. I recommend going with more thrust, you'll happier in the long run.
