Default chumming

I know some guys who fish the saginaw bay and they cut up thier dead minnows and drop them in the hole to bring the walleyes in. They say this works well as walleyes have great smelling power. My question is is this illegal? Comments would also be appreciated.

Jim.
I'm thinking its perfectly legal. Obviously, none of these extra baits are hooked to any lines, so why not? I throw all my half-minnows down the hole, and started doing so on purpose, with even more minnows in the 2000 season. Not for walleyes, but for white fish. Starting in 2000 I started getting more (BIG) multiple marks on the FL-8 and nothing would bite. A bud brought his under water camera along one day, and seen as many as a dozen white fish at one time slurping up the dead minnows on the bottom. Didn't take me long to rig up a (Dead minnow Tip-Up rig)and she worked. The next night I caught 2 white fish, one 6 pounds on this rig. I'll e-mail you the picture Jim, in case there are some doubting Thomas's:-).

This isn't completely on topic, but someone I know would put a whole minnow cage full of minnows under the ice. He argued that the 'school' of minnows attarcted the walleyes to his tip ups.

Stewart.
Its the truth. Not to re-post anything, but my Grandfather used to poke holes in the top of a 1 quart mason gar, put a chalk line through one of the holes and tie a knot in it. Then fill the gar with water and a few minnows, put the top back on and let it down to the bottom. The glass gar of course dissapears in the water, and it simply looks like a school of minnows on the bottom.

Now as for the recipe. Take one scaled white fish any size I guess, lay on/out enough aluminum foil to cover whole fish. Put verticle slices in fish every 2 inches, both sides. Season with garlic, powder or salt, salt, pepper, parsley flakes. Place 3 to 5 wedges of butter, 1/4 inch thick cut from the stick on or in the cut slices in the fish. Cook up one pack of Uncle Bens wild rice. Add one small can of baby mushrooms when rice is just about done. Baby shrimp is a nice touch as well. Stuff white fish stomach cavity with rice and mushrooms. Save any extra in pot to have with meal. Close foil around fish. Pre-heat oven to 300 degrees. Bake fish for 20 to 30 minutes. Remove foil and squeze lemon on fish. A light white German wine with this meal is excellent. The best part of this recipe for me is, the wife don't like baked fish.

Sounds yummy Dan I guess my buddy across the street ain't getting my next white fish unless I invite him over for dinner! Also in regards to the minnow cage guy I think the cut up dead minnows would would work better because of the smell of blood would attract the fish more. Anybody got a comment on this? Also Iv'e been using baitmate gamefish formula since 1993 it works well for walleye. I know a lot of guys who use wd-40 but baitmate works just as good stays on the bait longer and is better for the enviroment. I tested the product by using it on 1 bait and not the other and the bait mate rig consistently out fished the other one, did it the whole season too. You can get it at meijer's try it you will like it.

Hey, Jim.
Just a comment. Don't let MR. C.O. see you using WD-40. He kinda pre-warned me one day on the Saginaw when he seen it in my pail. He told me,if he caught me spraying, I'd be paying. Them C.O.'s are funny huh?

I also use a fish attractent scent when fishing. Started out years ago with Dr. Juice, have since went to B.A.N.G. formula. The Juice tends to (Gum) everything up after a while. The B.A.N.G. is an airesol. Use it for every kind of specie and every technique I employ.
