This is kind of a novice question, but . . .
When spooling a baitcaster (right hand handle), is the line supposed to come over the top of the spool? When spooling a spinning reel (handle on the left), is the line supposed to come from the bottom/underneath of the spool? |

For your baitcaster...just tie is straight on and give it a crank..this will answer your question...
For your spinning reel...the line should come off the spool the same direction your reel is spinning....Usually its the side of the spool with the label. |

Yes, when spooling a baitcaster the line should be comming off the top of the spool. When you are spooling a spinning reel, the line should be comming off the spool in a counter-clockwise direction.

You know, I used the methods mentioned by the other posters for many years and have had satisfactory results. However, now and then, it would seem that the spinning reel would end up with a lot of twists in the line.
Although nearly all of the line manufacturers recommend taking the line off the side of the filler spool for filling a spinning reel, I no longer do that. I simply put the line filler spool on a pencil - for either a spinning reel, or a bait caster. I tie the line on the spool, and I reel the line on the spool. Over long term use, I find that I acutally have fewer problems with line twist on my spinning reel, than doing it the recommended method by the manufacturers. You might try it both ways, and come to your own conclusion. Take care REW |

I would have to agree with REW. I ended up with more line twist when trying to take line off a filler spool over one side, even when it is going on the reel spool in the same direction. Believe it or not, there is a manufacturer who gives directions otherwise and that is Fin-nor. I put a pencil through the filler spool and then allow the line to cause the filler spool to rotate while I am pulling line off it. Been happy doing it that way. One other suitable method, is to put the reel spool on the end of a drill and allow it to wind the line on so the line is wrapped in the same direction as though the bail had done it.
