Default Rod repair

I want to repair a rod. The insert came out of the tip guide and the wire frame is deformed. Is there a solvent any of you rod repairmen have used to remove the tip? I have been to numerous sites and have had no success. all help appreciated.

I have always just taken a match and heated up the old tip and it pulls right off. Careful to heat only the tip though.

The tip has been replaced. I just hope it holds. I used super glue.

The correct way to repair a rod tip, is to heat the rod tip, to soften the heat activated adhesive inside the tip and remove the tip.
Use just a bit of added heat to remove the old adhesive.

If you don't have an alchol lamp (the preferred source of clean heat), a gas stove works well. It is nice to use a flame that burns clean and not yellow like a match. A yellow flame will leave black residue on the tip.

Pick up a stick of heat activated adhesive. Prefit the new tip, to insure that it is the correct size.

Heat the tip, and melt some adhesive into the tip. Heat the end of the glue stick and dab a bit of adhesive on the rod tip.

Then, while heating both the tip, and the rod tip, with the adhesive, put the tip in place, and insure that it is rotated correctly.

Pick off any excess adhesive - reheating slightly if necessary.

Double check the alignment of the tip, and slightly reheat if necessary to rotate the tip at all.

Take care
REW

Thanks REW. I don't have confidence in the way I did it. If it comes off I'll do it your way. I saw that adhesive at Gander Mountain when I bought the tip. And I'mm still pealing super glue off my fingers.

I worry about too much heat on the rod fibers with match, ligher etc and suggest a soldering iron passed up and down on the old tip sleeve until it loosens.

To remove the next guide down run a match over the finish covering the thread on the guide you wish to remove - enough to just bubble the finish covering the thread. Then use a razor blade and run it just parallel to the rod blank - shaving the thread and finish off on all or just part of the wrap. DON'T cut too deep and hit the rod blank. Then you can just peel the remainder of the finish and thread off with your hands or scrape it lightly to remove the old finish. Once cleaned up you're ready to wrap and refinish the new guide you're gonna add. Good luck - it's fun, Chuckles

Not to worry - just run the flame over it lightly enough to melt the glue for each application - it doesn't hurt the rod in moderation - disposable lighter will work too in a pinch. Just remeber too much of a good thing ... is seldom a good thing! Chuckles
