Default Fireline for Jigging Spoons

What knot do you guys use for jigging spoons with fireline , I have had a problem with it breaking at the knot but the same knot holds great on a jig .

Are you using a split ring on the jigging spoon? If not, I recommend it. I had the same problem with a couple of different knots until I started using small split rings. Since then, no problem.

My set-up for spooning goes like this: Main line to swivel to short leader of Fireline(8 inches or so) to small cross-lock snap. Tie the knots using palomar knots and you'll be good to go. I like the snap on the end so I can switch spoon weights and colors very quickly instead of wasting time re-tieing all the time. I like to keep one rod rigged and dedicated for this at all times. It also doubles as my bottom bouncer rod for the few times that I use that method.

Use the Palomer knot.

Hey Supertroller, is your main line also Fireline or just your leader. I like your idea of being able to change out jiggins spoons. Will have to write that one down.

I use fireline to a barrel swivel (palomar knot) then about 12-14" of mono and a cross lock snap (again palomar knot).

Default Hey Super and T-Mac

I had a problem with silver buddies pivoting enough on the cross lock to cause tangles. Any thoughts? Tried using the crosslock they supplied should I try smaller cross lock or am I working them to hard? Eyedoktr and I both had this problem on an outing this May fishing river with good current that is when we went to the split rings. The crosslocks would be much simpler but just lost too much fishing time untangling.

Personally, I usually don't like the ones that come on the blades (some other brands come with them, too). Seems like they tangle too easily. I went to a smaller sized snap and it seemed to help.
I still get tangled, but it seemed to help.

This is my set up also .On the leader part of this I use a heavy pound test like 10 to 17 lb. Helps keep things stiff and straight.
On blade baits I put new trebles on cutting the eye and pinching It on . This also helps things from getting tangled up as much.

I prefer mono both slabbing and ice fishing. The thicker diameter line makes the spoon flutter slowly and not fall as quickly. I guess you could use heavier diameter braid but then snags would be very difficult to break off? I also have better luck with 10 or 12 lb mono when icefihing with airplane jigs. With thin braids they drop to quickly and don't plane like they are designed to do.

My main line is Fireline too. I use Fireline for just about everything. Couldn't find the 300 yd. spools earlier this summer so I bought another spool of Power Pro. I don't like it quite as well but there is not anything different in the actual performance that I can tell, other than that I think the Power Pro is noisier going thru the rod guides. This is for 30 lb. test and others have said that they thought the Power Pro was quieter than Fireline in the smaller line tests. Whatever works for ya and makes ya happy I say. I like the 30# test for jigging too because when it snags I can straighten out the hooks and get my spoons back most of the time. Be sure to keep something handy to wrap the line around! I still get cuts just from normal usage when tightening knots and stuff. Wet hands cut easier I think. We get alot of floating weeds where I predominately fish so a Superline really shows me instantly whenever the baits get fouled by something. I can usually just rip the lures ahead and get the junk to pull off. If not, I don't waste much fishing time by dragging a screwed up bait that I can't get a reading on. Fireline and Power Pro make me much more efficient.

P.S. I like a fairly small, round end, black, crosslock snap. The line is still only 8 or 10 lb. diameter so I don't worry about spooking fish in the dirty water I typically fish. If you fish clear water, you might want to go to a smaller line. I don't like flourocarbon lines because they are too fussy on tieing knots with. It you're not perfect,,,, you know that knot is going to fail,,, GAURANTEED!
