Default Snubbers

OK, I am an Erie fishing newbe, and I need some help with the length of snubber that I am going to use on my dipsies. I see they come most commonly in 6, 8, and 12 inch, which one would you recommend?? What color would you recommend?
Also, reading the things that I have, there is mention of using the snubber from dipsy to rod, and using it from dipsy to your bait. Can someone explain the applications of both of these methods?

Joe,
Only time you would put a snubber in between your rod and dipsey is if you screwed up and attached it to the wrong side of the dipsey.

The best snubbers I know of are made and sold by Amish Outfitters. Clear UV resistant material that outlasts the bright colored ones sold by Luhr Jensen by a longshot.

www.amishoutfitters.com check them out on the site and call Capt Frank at 800 473-1748

I've used both the 9 and 12 inchers on Erie - my preference is the 9 inch.

Joe,
I typically run the 6 inch light snubber.
I only run the snubber AFTER the dipsy.
The key is to have some give - after the dipsy, because the dipsy tends to act as an anchor, and allow the fish to throw the hook.

If you have a snubber before the dipsy, you have a bit of a problem is releasing the dipsy to reel up.

In addition, there is little need to have a snubber BEFORE the dipsy.

Take care

I run 12 inch snubber between the dipsy's and leaders. I use both red and clear colors, I put red on the dipsys that go on the right side of the boat and clear on the ones for the left side, thats the way I have of quickly telling which dipsy goes where.

If a snubber is deemed necessary on Dipsey's, Why don't you guys use them on Jet Divers????? I just don't think they are a necessity if you use a long rod and a drag setting just tight enough to keep it from slipping. My point of view.

Curt...I like the snubber with dipsies because if I have it set heavy or just have plain overadjusted it and hook up a dink I am able to give it a pop and release the dipsie without the shock going to the fish.

The other reason to use a snubber is to help in avoiding having the hook thrown by a very active fish, like a salmon or big trout.

The dipsy's or jet diver's can tand to anchor the line; and give the fish leverage to throw the hook.

ST,

If I know the chances of running into a steelhead are remote, I don't always use them with dipsies. Can't say whether not running them has ever cost me some fish but have not noticed losing any more eyes when I don't. Not really a big concern for me most of the time since on erie everyone just about has to use nets to keep the eyes from jumping in the boat:)

I don't really know if they are necessary, but I use them on jets & small dipsies when targeting steelies. Don't bother with it when eye fishing.

I'd think the resistance/shock involved with a fish going nuts on a big dipsy would be greater than with a jet.

Regards,
GU
