Default Okuma convectors

I have 4 convector 20d reels that I usually use for board reels. I am wanting to make up some rigger rods for salmon fishing but am afraid that the capacity is too small, 160/20. My other possibility is to switch 2 20s into dipsey reels since I use braid I am pretty sure I can get a 300 yd spool of 12/50 power pro on it. So do you think I can get away with using them as rigger reels for salmon and/or will they handle dipseys ok with the higher gearing than the 30s I currently use. Thanks for any thoughts on the matter.

You can get a 300 yard spool of 8/30, 10/40, 12/50 braid on the size 20 Convectors. They will work fine for dipseys and for that matter we often run braid for downrigger rods too. So spool them up and have a blast when the reels start screaming...

I would think running the 20's with dipsy's would be somewhat marginal due to the higher gearing. You might have to do some serious pumping on the big fish. I'm curious to hear how it goes.

Good suggestion on increasing your line capacity on using the braid even for the riggers. Be prepared of course to make some adjustments or changes to your current releases of course. As reels for the riggers I'd think they'd do just fine.

I'm using a pair of 30's for running dipsy's that I've added to my arsenal of Diawa Sg 47's and they're doing great. I broke down and got 4 20's that I use for Walleyes. For me, I got tired of having reels pull double duty for both species. I like to use 30 lb braid for walleye and 65lb for for dipsy's (salmon). Riggers, I still like mono. Got tired of having to switch everything around or not having what I wanted, especially late August and September when the fishing is so good for both species.

JJmac, I too am getting sick of changing lines around only to switch them right back a week later. I just have to deal with it for a few more seasons as my kids eat enough to pay for my house and boat and everything else. I figure in 2 years my oldest will be 7 so he can get a job and be self supportive then I can get a new boat and more gear:):):)

Just got back yesterday from Milwaukee. I had my Okoma 20d's spooled with 20lb mono and the worked just fine for riggers and dipseys. Caught kings to 20lbs----man what a blast.
