I AM GOING BACK TO A LODGE IN NORTHWEST ONTARIO THIS SUMMER. I WENT THERE TWICE LAST YEAR AND JUST LOVE THE PLACE. THE PIKE ARE PRETTY BIG AND THE WALLEYE ARE NUMEROUS..... TOO NUMEROUS I THINK.
MY PROBLEM IS THAT WE CATCH PLENTY OF WALLEYE BUT NO BIG ONES. THERE HAVE BEEN SOME BIG(25+ INCHERS) CAUGHT BUT NOT MANY. MY THEORY IS THAT COMPETITION FOR OUR OFFERINGS (ALMOST EXCLUSIVELY JIGS) IS GREAT AND THE LITTLE GUYS GET TO THEM BEFORE ANY BIG ONES CAN.... JUST MY THEORY , I COULD BE WRONG. I AM NOT A NOVICE EYE FISHERMAN , BUT I AM CERTAINLY NOT CLOSE TO A VETERAN. WHAT SHOULD I CHANGE? SIZE OF JIGS/ TAILS? GO TO A CRAWLER HARNESS? GO TO A MEDIUM - SIZE CRANK? ANY RECOMMENDATIONS WOULD BE APPRECIATED. |

Big baits catch Big fish.Go to a larger crankbait if you are after the larger fish. This also goes for the size of the minnows you use also.Musky fisherman catch some big eyes while casting those logs around.

1. sometimes the move out off the deeper sides of the structure you pound the smaller fish - sometimesthe older year classes will slide off into deeper water onto adjacent flats or deeper humps
2. fish twilight periods 3. look for suspended marks chasing baitfish too 4. go to Lake Erie |

LOL .... THANKS FOR THE ADVICE ABOUT ERIE FUZZY. BEEN THERE AND LUCKED INTO A 31 1/2"ER. I FIGURED BIGGER WAS THE KEY..... AND MAYBE THE DEEPER EDGES . THE LAKE I GO TO IS CARPETED WITH WALLEYE SO I THOUGHT THE COMPETITION THEORY WAS THE KEY....

Like Risor says, go big baits. Oswego Harbor near me is famous for huge spring walleye and the bait of preferance is an 18 Rapala.
Also if you are jigging you are fishing bottom/structure. Move off deeper and look suspended, get away from the crowds of dinks. Dont expect the fast and furious action. You may be fishing all day for just a couple bites. |

ALot has to do with the water. I fish the same waters as Gilligan and there's nothing on earth as big as a Lake Ontario walleye.
