Default "Slow Death"

After explaining this technique to another fisherman the other day, I got some funny looks, using the terminology "Slow Death" to explain how to fish this set-up for walleye.

I think it's time to give it a new name and I recommend that we name it after the guy from SD that perfected it, with his permission. Any other ideas for a new name? Anything would be better than "Slow Death".

I like the name. They already have the hooks coming out that are named the same thing. What is so wrong with it?

Sounds like the Mustad slow death hook's name isn't totally confirmed yet.

following comes from thenextbite.com web site on the new hook:

Glad there's some interest here guys. The hook weve been told should be in the stores sometime in February. In fact, I just received a few samples, from Mustad, of the final hook, today in the mail. As far as the tru turn hooks go, anyone who has known about Slow Death probably has tried those hooks or made their own bends to try to keep the crawler spinning consistently. This hook will be the final bend of several years of trying to get the best presentation possible, without having to rig the crawler perfectly everytime. You will find that this new hook will get your crawlers spinning almost everytime. And for you guys who know this tactic, that's not always the easiest thing to do.

It will be available in three colors: bronze, gold, red. From what the final packs say, this hook will be officially titled "Intense Crawler Action" unless they make a change to slow death hook. Hope this answers some questions, and we should see the hooks soon. We love seeing all the interest, but please use your real names when posting. Thanks guys, and GO PACKERS!

It's not so much the name as it was the awkward situation. While explaining how this rigging was used to win most of the tournaments in the Northwest, I found out, one of the guys' wife has terminal ovarian cancer. A different name would have been more appropriate at that moment.

A side note; It's not all about the hook. Sometimes the rigging produces better with a fine wire octopus hook, with no spin and a bit of air, letting the bait glide, resembling a minnow moving into the weeds.

Another way to fish it with a different hook, is to leave a small snout of the worm, acting like a rudder before you run the hook into the worm, or plug-cut the worm. This will create a large diameter spin without the swivel. As the worm unloads when you hesitate the bait, walleye will instinctivly bite this when nothing else is working.

If the bite is on, a tight spin is "deadly".:-)
