Default Prairie doggin' ?

Few years back I did some prairie dog shooting in both N & S Dakota, but after Rosebud added a guide requirement, and many of the regular spots we shot at getting enough shooting traffic that it was a long trip from Mpls for not a lot of shooting.

I've been hearing lately that the ranchers are almost begging shooters to come out and shoot dogs, and the numbers are high enough that one would get lots of shooting.

Anybody know if this is true or just wishful thinking?

I'd like to get at least one more trip or two before to long.

I heard on an outdoor radio show that the Selfridge, SD area is overrun with prairie dogs, and you should have no trouble finding a place to shoot.
Maybe a call to their county agent will provide some information.

Thanks Phil, used to be shooters were pretty tight lipped about shooting spots so I appreciate the tip.

I'd also heard the Eagle butte area was good now, but that's one of the spots we used to go to and it got hit pretty heavy 5-6 years ago.

Just got back from the Murdo area of SD.
We went out with no place in particular to shoot. About any town hall will have a list of places to shoot, but MOST places will be looking for about $50.00/day/man to hunt on their land (they got to pay taxes too).
We went down to White River and ran into a guy at the general store/gas station that offered to show us some places to shoot on his ranch. He showed us 2 great PD towns and told us we could shoot as long as we wanted. The 3 of us offered him $100.00 bucks, which he gladly took. It ended up costing us about 11 bucks/day (3 days, and we were going to stay 5 days for the 100.00, but the rains started real bad) and we had nonstop shooting limited only by the distance you wanted to shoot, and how bad you wanted to burn out your barrel.
You can find a group of ranchers in most restaurants in the morning eating breakfast. Their very friendly, and most will have some info on where you can shoot.
I too use to hunt the Rosebud, but between their new "Guide" rules. Plus the fact that most of the towns there have been poisoned, we did much better off the res.
