Default water trap filter w/optimax

I know that mercury cautions against using a water separating filter with the optimax, but has anyone used one? If so, what filter did you use and were you happy with the results? Thought the filter might eliminate the chance of water problems and I would not need to use fuel additives. Do you use both the filter and additives. What has worked best?

The Optimax has a built in fuel filter and water sepreator. Standing behind the engine it is on the port side under the cowling. It is a canister type has a wire attached to the bottom of it that sends an alarm if to much water gets in the filter.
