i am looking at two different boats...one has 03' 225merc 4stroke and the other has 02' 225yamaha 4stroke. can anybody shed some light on which is better or the pros and cons. I know the merc has just over 300hrs and nothing out of the ordinary on the report. the yamaha im still looking into. another question i have is a 4stroke a longer life engine than a 2cycle...i am assuming it should be.
thanks ryan |

both are great engines. 300 hrs isnt alot for that year of an engine. Some guys will put that on in a year... You cant go wrong with either...Which one looks like it is in better shape? How is the lower unit? any leaks on the inside? ect. I am personally a merc man.. But have been around some sweet yammies.

I don't believe the Verado was introduced until the 2005 model year. Assuming the '03 Merc 4-Stroke is just that, then it's the same engine as the Yamaha 225...at least the powerhead is. I'm not sure about the lower unit and such, perhaps someone could offer accurate info there. But as far as the powerheads go, they're the same engine.
As far as longevity of four stroke engines, I just helped a friend replace a Chevy 454 off an irrigation unit that had just over 20,000 hours on it with absolutely nothing but oil changes for 20 some odd years. I wouldn't worry about the longevity of a four stroke engine. hathead |

I run a 225 yamaha on my 2003 202 Crestliner RCL tounament series and a finer motor I have never had. Runs smooth and quiet. Starts fast and purs like a kitten. I run up to anchor or tied to a tree and left the motor running (wind blowing). Started fishing and couldn't even hear that I had left it on until I ambled towards the back of the boat. Happened several times. If you are in the market for this boat, I am selling it. Going back to a tiller. Live in Iowa and not going on so many trips up North. Staying home and fishing more. Don't need a big boat here.

Hathead, your 4 stroke OB ain't gonna get no 20,000 hours LOL That 454 was probably idling for 20,000 hours ! I've seen a lot of 454 inboards with 2,500 to 3,500 hour rebuilds. A lot more RPM demands on marine engines.

Just for the record, that song was about Mercury automobiles. There is a song called Yamaha Superstar, but I don't think it is about outboards either. It's a weird instrumental thing with what sounds like someone talking in Japanese at the end. If a person is going to buy a motor on the strength of song lyrics, I don't thing there is any question that one should take into consideration a little know song called "Men" by Rudy Cheeks and the Young Adults. Load the car with sporting goods Spend a week out in the woods Drink a hundred cans of beer Catch a fish, shoot a deer... ...Outdoors The living's good When your outboard Motor is and Evinrude This weighed heavily into my decision to buy an E Tec.
