My Mercury 90HP 4s (2006) speedo not working due to a nick somewhere in between. Being "Not Very Handy", I will let the Marine replace this part while Winterizing. My question is;
1) How many hours of Labour I expect to see? 2) Is the part/s expensive/costing? 3) Since Speedo to me is useless, if its too costly, does it make sense to give up the Speedo and put a Water Pressure Gauge on the Dash? Thank you |

A small hole in the leading edge of your lower unit is where the speedo pickup is located. This hole is probably plugged , this is a common problem. Easy to clear out with a small drill bit carefully turned by hand(no powered drill needed) to clear out the obstruction. If the tubing that connects the lower unit to the speedo had a hole in it you would notice water collecting in the bottom of your boat because the speedo works off water pressure.

San Chan,
If the tubing is the problem, there should be no reason for the dealer to replace the speedo itself. They would have to run new tubing anyway if you decided to get the water pressure gauge. I can't imagine it would take more than 1/2 hour of time to replace the speedo tubing, and maybe 40-50cents/foot for the tubing itself. HRG |

Of course labor will cost more than the cost of the tubing. It will probably be easier to replace all the tubing rather than trace down the source of the leak and repair it(cutting out the area where the tubing is punctured and add a new section of tubing). Lets us know what you find and how you get it fixed.

So...you know it is a nick in the tube for sure? What caused the nick? Has it been doing it since day one? Maybe a free fix...? Ya never know...hey? |

They may have to drop the lower unit. If they do, have them replace the water pump while they are at it.

Got the Marina to looked at it beginning of the season looking for the reason "Why water in the Bilge Area after a day of fishing?". Started worrying about Rivets Problem but water not coming in when boat is on the water a few days. Have them check the rivets by filling water in...........although they can't confirm its the Tubing that I am talking about but they mentioned "its our best Guess", since the Bilge-water problem happened as soon as the speedo stopped working. I have took the tube-end from the Speedo side and run the boat, no water comes out (they told me water should come out) Long Story Short.............Didn't want to bother with it since after a week boat on the water and not taking in more water(only while running, water will come in), I decided to fish the season and get things done after. |

Use your gps instead of the speedo tube... Most speedo are not accurate anyway. Now, if you're definitely getting water in the boat due to some problem with the speedo tube, I guess you gotta get it fixed then... just my two cents...

You could disconnect the tubing at the motor and plug it. This will isolate the tubing that is mounted from the lower unit to the top area of your motor, only a short length of tubing is internal in the lower unit. This will stop the water in the bilge are if the speedo tubing leaking is your problem. To find the leak you then could plug the tubing at the speedo end, attach a small air compressor where you have disconnected the tubing at the motor, add air and listen for the leak.
