Default Lowrance XOG?

I just lost my Garmin Nuvi screen. I'm thinking about getting a Lowrance XOG for car and boat use. Has anybody hear used one? Like it? Thanks.

Does the turn by turn, car version work quickly? Do you need chips for the car version?

I have one. The wife has a Garmin Nuvi in her car. Personally I like the garmin more. There's more info on the screen then what you'll see on the xog. If it were me, I'd get another garmin nuvi.

I have a Gamin Nuvi and recently purchased the XOG to take on fly-ins in Canada. Have used the XOG on the road, seems to work fine, but harder to read the info on the screen than the Nuvi. Have tried it with the Lowrance Hot Spots chip and reads it just like my larger Lowrance units. You don't need any chips for road use and it includes Canada, where the Nuvi comes with USA only, Canada download is extra. Haven't tried it with the Freedom Maps topo maps yet, but that is what I bought it for. The lakes we go to in Canada are not on any of the Lowrance or Navionics chips.

That's what I was afraid of. I really like the nuvi for driving.

Default Car or Boat

Not wanting to be a smart *** --- but who cares if the garmin is better? You either want a unit that does both functions or not? The guy who said get the nuvi seems to have missed your point.

I have used a Lowrance XOG, a Magellan Crossover 2500T and a Lowrance iWay 600 and all of them do an excellent job of trying to serve BOTH needs. Are they better than the Garmin on the road or a $600+ chartplotter on the water; heck no. But I would like to see you use the nuvi on the water or a lowrance plotter in your car. With any of the above products you can find your way around town AND return to your waypoints on the water with little effort. All for less than $250.

I would look at the above models and see what maps are available. I use the 5 inch iWay 600 on my big water boat and use my Crossover in Canada. Both units come preloaded with maps of NA and lake maps of the US. For the Crossover, I was able to get all of the back road lakes I fish in Canada and the maps only cost me $50.
