This is a dumb question to most of you but something that I am uncertain about. I don't live near a fishery that has a slot limit. When a fish is called a "slot fish," does that mean in the excluded length range or is it a legal fish? Thanks

A lot fish would not be legal to keep, at least anywhere I have fished.

Typically a slot fish is one which falls between the minimum and maxium length of the designated slot limit for that lake. Any fish caught between those lengths "In the Slot" must be immediately returned. Example of a typical slot around here is no walleye between 14 - 18 in's can be kept, Any fish that falls within that range would be a slot fish.
hope that helps good luck GF |

WA state has slot restrictions on most if not all of it walleye fisheries and most of them are something like this. 5 fish daily limit. Limit may contain 5 fish between 16"-22", OR, 4 fish between 16"-22" and 1 fish over 22". Not more than 1 fish per person over 22" allowed in daily limit. This leads people at our tourneys to talk about getting "Overs" and "Slot fish". "Overs" are just that, the ones over 22". The slot reference is in regards to the ones you need between 16"-22". Probably what "slot" references is more determined if the "slot" fish are what can be kept or what has to be thrown back. A "slot" can be used for either option..

In addition, a slot limit is typically imposed by the DNR to protect the breeding stock of a fishery.

A "slot fish" has been well explained above.
Kind of off topic, but.....I am surprised there are still areas to live where slots are not in use somewhere nearby...on some kind of fish. Slots work excellent where there is heavy fishing pressure. |

Talk about confusing. I've fished lakes that have slot limits. Most lakes limit the take to a number of fish under the slot and 1 over the slot. BUT, I have fished lakes that allow you to only take fish IN the slot length. Go figure!

Were planning on headin to Loma.
Sounds like the ramp might not be open as of this posting though. But that is unconfirmed. Supposed to be pretty warm from here on out this week so well make the call Thursday pm. I may have to bring a 3 inch pump from work and pump river water on the ramp ice for a few hours but one way or another I think we can get in. Have you heard anything from the GF boys? I imagine Denny H has been down there to take a look. |
