Default 2009 Kolar Toyota ALS Walleye Tournament

14th Annual Tournament Returns to Island Lake

April 6, 2009

David Kolquist (218) 727-8555
Ray Higgins (218) 591-2692

Registrations are now being accepted for the 14th Annual Kolar Toyota ALS Walleye Tournament. This year’s championship will again be decided on Island Lake and will be held on Saturday May 30, 2009. Skyline Lanes will again serve as Tournament Headquarters and host all pre-tournament events and Saturday night’s post-award dinner.

Registration forms are currently available at:
Kolar Toyota, 4781 Miller Trunk Hwy, Hermantown
Skyline Lanes, 4894 Miller Trunk Hwy, Hermantown
Gander Mountain, 4275 Haines Road, Hermantown
Fisherman’s Corner, 5675 Miller Trunk Hwy, Canosia Twp.

The tournament features 200 two-person teams, and the pair with the most total combined weight will be declared the winner. Every tournament angler will also be eligible for the Grand Door Prize: a Toyota Tacoma from Kolar Toyota in Duluth.

In 13 previous tournaments, anglers have raised well over $1,000,000. All proceeds go to patient care for those with ALS and to research toward treatments and a cure.

Kolar Toyota returns as the tournament’s title sponsor, and former professional athletes Kent Hrbek, Darby Hendrickson, and Jim Johnson are back as tournament hosts.

"This tournament is a highlight of my summer," said Hrbek, who lost his father to ALS in 1982. "We’re working to find a cure for ALS, and until we do, we’ll keep raising money to right Lou Gehrig’s Disease."

Lou Gehrig's Disease is a fatal disease that affects 30,600 people in the United States and 365 in Minnesota. Every week, an average of two Minnesotans dies as a result of ALS and two Minnesotans are diagnosed with the disease. ALS results in a gradual, progressive wasting away of voluntary muscles, often leading to total paralysis. Although there is currently no known cause or cure, advances in medical technology are allowing people with ALS to lead more productive lives. Research continues in hopes of discovering a cause and cure. Dollars raised will go toward furthering this research and helping ALS patients here in the Northland
