Default Tac not working

Took the boat out yesterday, not the first time this year. Noticed the tac was at 6000, and not even WOT. Shut the motor down, and the tac wasn't on zero.Turned the key on, and it went back to zero. If you tap it on the face, it does move back. Unit is a 1997. Is it time for a new tac, or can I tear it apart? thanks Doug

Can't comment on all your symptoms, but the ones quoted above describe how my tach has behaved since new 18 years ago.

Default tach

Try this. Pull the tach out there should be a little turn screw that you set for what type system it's on. Make sure you look where it is set, then turn the knob/screw/dial what ever you want to call it in both directions and around a few times this will take off any grim or corrosion on the contacts, set it back to the right spot.. I did this to mine and it works better than new.

Mine has a 3-position slider switch that gets bumped when I'm working on stuff under the driver's console.
