Terry, if you are after a true trophy walleye then I would recommend the Huron, or Vermillion areas. There are plenty of other areas but these two towns have great fishing, accomodations, restaraunts, ramps, and tackle shops. I'm sure others will chime in. These towns are in Ohio.

You said it Boatnut. Last year election day slammed em north of the dumping grounds in front of Huron.
Lots of boats working tight over to Sandusky also.Reefrunner's 70-90 foot back.

The last few seasons, you only had to go 1-3 miles out to get on the fish. Sometimes we were only a nine iron from shore (I'm a big hitter, though. That would probably be a seven iron for most).

Alot of the October fishing for the big schools of eyes was being done at the top end of the sandbar and out at the 36 line off huron, the big bite for big eyes going on close to shore didn't show up until november. I went out with Bigfoot October 18th I believe and we fished the north end of the bar I believe and whacked a 3 man limit, no pigs but good grade of fish with one nice 8 pounder and a few 5-6's. The hogs got caught off cedar point and at the 36 line late october around the WC get together, in November the fish where in 25-35 FOW pretty darn close to the huron river that's only 1-3 miles.

Erie fish don't go into the river you'll find them near the river but not in the river.

Alot of where the fish will be depends on water temp as well. You can still catch fish and alot of them near shore but the big schools and big fish are usually out a ways in october, at least they have been the last few years and that's where I fish for them.

Terry,
If you want to come to Huron for big fish, come late October early November. Last year was just a spectacular year I ended up with my first over 10 #'s. I saw quite a few in the 11, 12, &13 # range. The easiest way to do this would be to go to the www.walleye101.com site. Lance Valentine runs an on water fishing school for those weekends. Ususally a 3-4 day event. The price runs around $300 for room and evening meals. For your first time to Erie in the fall this is the best bet. Lance is a top notch walleye spokes person and teacher. When on the water everyone is tuned to channel 68 giving out info on what they have caught, weigh points and lure type on depth. In-line planers are a must and reef runners. When you come to Huron there is a bait shop right next to launch that has everything. If you decide to come GOOD LUCK.
