Just wondering if any of you brat lovers have preferances other than the National Standard of good J-villes. I have been trying anything and everthing. Nothing seems to come close to what I experienced in the very earyl 60s at a drug store in the south of Stutgartt W.Germany. I could drive a long way to get something that good. Just wondering what you folks are putting on your grills. Checkmate

Yep, tied a pile of them in June. Loved them. Very meaty not fatty. Quality is impecable. Still brousing around for that other brat that some one knows about. I have no objections to Sheboygan as my father of 90 and I have now decide that may be our Thanksgiving meal. Yes we like Brats. Hope to find some one with another tip. Checkmate.

A few butcher shops locally are making some darn good cheddar/jalapeno brats, jalapeno sticks, pizza brats, ect......Butcher Block Meats in Mandan and West Dakota Meats in Bismarck to name a few.
And then everyone makes their own around Dec. or Jan from their venison. Some of the best we've tried was Dustin's cheese and jalapeno country style sausage. He had it darn near perfect. I never used to eat anything w/ jalapenos; different story today. |

Try House of Meats in Toledo, Ohio. They have outstanding brats and kelbasa. Used to bring down 20 pounds of each to southern Indiana when my brother used to live in Bedford.

There are butcher shops all over the country, especially the Midwest, that have great brats. If you are buying Johnsonvilles then you are looking at mass produced brats. My preference in order is Usinger, Sheboygan Brat, Klement's, Johnsonville, and then Hillshire Farms.
Just my two cents, Brian |

Not a Klements fan, they seem really dry. We do use the JVille's because sometimes we're in a hurry at the grocery stores. Generally the butcher shops have the best ones. Our grocery store ones in the meat department are actually pretty tasty too.
I love the wild rice brats. Also the spicy sausage ones are excellent too. Sometimes we boil in beer first then grill, sometimes we just grill. |

I must say being from Sheboygan, The Brat is a Big part of our city. As we speak the is a 4 day festival going on that is all about brats http://www.bratdays.org/
Some here speak of Sheboygan Brats. While not a actual brand. Most brats from this area are very good. As far as mass produced brats Johnsonville ( a small village NW of Sheboygan) does a fine job. Meisfields meat market on the north side of Sheboygan has quite a following. They also produce a few specialty brats that are very good as well. I believe they will ship across the US. www.miesfelds.com/ As important as the brat is to a sandwich, the Sheboygan hardroll ( again not an actual brand) is just as important. These are made by local bakeries. With City Bakery's being my favorite. http://www.roadfood.com/Restaurant/R...11/city-bakery It's hard to beat a double Meisfields brat on a City Bakery's hardroll with sour kraut and Saz's Gluten free Barbecue sauce. www.sazs.com/Barbecue/GlutenFreeProducts.html As good as they are I limit myself to only eating brats about 2 to 3 times a year. As there not the most healthy of foods. It's saturday go enjoy a beer and a brat. Last edited by jarhead; 08-01-2009 at 02:24 PM. Reason: edit |
