My Drain plug in my Yam 150 appears stripped and some of the fresh oil I just put in for the winter leaked out. Will any damage be done to the motor sitting over winter if the crankcase isn't full of oil? I plan on taking the boat in to the dealer in the spring and have him look at the plug and a few other things.

The gasket for the drain screw may have deteriorated or gotten lost.
A simple and cheap fix. I suggesst checking it and replacements can be purchased at a dealer. Then top off the fluid, if that corrects the problem. JDP Last edited by JDP; 10-10-2009 at 11:01 AM. |

You'll be fine. The film of oil will adhere to crankcase parts just as well as any other part. Just keep the hole plugged so moisture doesn't get in there. If it's leaking bad and worries you, just keep a bottle of oil handy and top it off occasionally.

Get yourself a few sheets of legal size paper and write on it "CHECK OIL LEVEL BEFORE CRANKING" with a red magic marker and tape to the sides and front of the cowl.
I forgot what I did yesterday, much less what happened four to six months ago. It may sound stupid but there's a fist full of Grover Cleveland at stake here. Forgive me, it just one of them airplane mechanic things

Thanks everyone. I did jam a clean rag around the drain plug for now and did right myself a note reminding me not to start it up in the spring until the problem is fixed.
