Does anyone know if a Viper prop can be rehubbed to fit a Merc or if there is a thrust washer that will stop it from going on too far. Any suggestions or ideas are appreciated.
Thanks Mark |

TBX Propellor Hub KITS "PN 177288 - For competitor outboards. List Price = $ 41.87. Call 631-991-4491 to order. Includes Mercury, Nissan, Suzuki and more." I believe the "Complete" hub kit includes the proper thrustwasher...and everything that would be needed. Wayne Last edited by Senderofan; 10-24-2009 at 04:05 PM. |

Unfortunately this an older model with the pressed in hub. It only cost a dollar on an ebay auction and I would give it a 7 out of 10 for condition and would make a great backup prop for my boat. If it is not possible I can definatley get my money back from it.

...you should find that the OMC prop's splines are the same as the Merc but it goes way too far down the propshaft and hits the lower unit. A quick fix is to scrounge a second thrust washer of the right thickness to space you out properly, or if you have access to a friendly machinist he can cut an overly thick second washer down. If I recall, I once used an oddball Yamaha washer which was fairly thin for this that I found at my dealer in his pile of cheap stuff. Its also possible to do this if you can find some big steel washers of the right size. Just keep stacking them between the thrust bearing and the prop until you're spaced back enough so you can freely spin the prop while pushing it in to take up any slack in the prop shaft bearings. When bass boats all ran chopper props this was a common set up since the choppers seemed to run faster when spaced back as far as possible on the prop shaft. When properly spaced you'll usually find that the prop nut no longer goes on far enough, so you can replace the OMC back washer with a plain steel washer or two and use a Merc nut with it's elastic insert to replace the OMC nut and cotter. I bought a thrust washer cut to size and a cut down Merc nut years ago for about $20 when I decided to run an OMC prop as my primary prop on my Merc. You may still find some of these kits on line used. The one I had was from Baker Marine and was called an OMERC kit. I also believe that DAH Props has their version of the kit available, but probably for more than $20. today.

Depends if its the v-4 or v-6 gearcase prop.

It is for a V6 gearcase. Like Staylor has said it has the correct spline but it slides on too far with a regular Merc thrust washer. I can try to double up the washers and see if I still have enough thread left to get a nut on it. I will look into the kits he has mentioned.
Propman: Can the entire center be changed out for the Flo-Torq style center? Thanks Mark |

Thanks for the reply Propman. I guess I will look into the other suggestion by Staylor or look around for for another prop for a spare. This can always be used for a wall mount or make a clock out of it. The price was right at $0.99 plus $16.00 in shipping.
