Will a 140 suzuki adequately power a 2003 tournament sport 185? I don't have to be a speed demon or anything, but I would like to know if that would get me into th 40s.
Thanks, Brad |

I had a 2004 Alumacraft Trophy 175 with a 140 Johnson (same exact motor, minus the appearance) and it would top out at 45. I'm guessing a 185 TS would top out around a little less than that... maybe 43 or so.

My 1700 Crestliner and 140 Johnson 4 Stroke tops out at 45mph. Excellent motor with great hole shot.

An 18' Lund and 135 opti runs 42-44 gps. I would think you would be in the 40's pretty easily. Maybe someone with that set up will respond.

yeah Larry, you are right, but that 135 Opti is more like a 150 4 stroke than anything, it is just a strong strong motor.
The Conservation officer's boat here where I am is a Lund Tyee 18' and it has a 140 Johnson. (same motor as has been stated) I do 35 mph and they pass me pretty easily guessing they are doing somewhere around 43-45 mph, so yeah, I think it would be enough. |

I have a Warrior 1890 SC with a Merc 125 2 Stroke that tops out at 42. Same size/weight boat, smaller motor; should get you up and going!

not sure how a Lund 18 ft Mr pike compares weight wise to the boat in question but I have a buddy that has a 18 ft mr pike with a 140 johnson on it. He is only running an aluminum prop and he is pulling 47. which surprises me but he also doesnt have a kicker ect....Max hp on his boat is a 150 so he is definalty not underpowered.

Can't speak about the motor as I've never owned one but I do have a 2004 TS 185 which is the exact same boat as the 2003. The boat is no light weight (1600# dry) and the max Hp rating is 200. I have a Yamaha 200 HPDI and T8 kicker, bow mounted Minn Kota PD, 3 batteries, onboard charger and with full fuel and 1 passenger I'm pushing over 2500# of weight. At WOT I get 50-51 GPS. I don't think you'll see much more that low 40's at WOT with the Suzuki and probably less with added passengers. That would put your cruising speed somewhere in the 30's
The best thing to do is try to take the rig out on the water and see if it performs like you want it to under the conditions you'll use it. Personally, I wouldn't go less than a 150 and a 175 would be even better. At a cruise speed of 40 MPH GPS my rig gets very good mileage and I've still got a lot of throttle if I need it. Just more stuff to think about. b2 p.s. Here's a link to an early 2000 performance report for the 140 tested on a Lund Fisherman. Note the Lund weighs almost 300 lbs less than the Alumacraft TS 185 http://suzukimarine.com/boat_builder...an_1700/df140/ Last edited by bumps2; 04-17-2010 at 08:22 AM. Reason: added link |

I have the 140 on a 2004 Alumacraft TS175. Top speed with a stainless prop under ideal conditions is 43 mph on gps. Top speed is usually around 41 mph. Look for a top of 40 mph under most conditions. Do not expect more than 42 mph. It is a great motor, but the horse power was over rated.

I have this boat with a 150 yammie 4 stroke and with a kicker and 2 people and all the other extras I get 47 mph on the gps consistently so I'm sure you would get 42-45 mph easily.
