Last year I purchased the HDS8 and was over whelmed by the size even with the screen split with MAP and sonar. This spring I purchased structure scan and after a presentation on the HDS system by Bill Carson I found out that I needed to have the screen split into 4 windows. I now wish that I had the HDS 20 or at least two HDS10 like Mike Maddalena has on his striper barge. Once again the technology has passed me buy while I slept. I am now saving up for the new HDS 20.

I hear ya. My setup is just like yours - HD8 and structure scan. The 4 way split really shrinks those screens. I plan on picking up an hd5 or 7 for extra screen space.

If you have room on your console, I would suggest buying an old LMS or LCX unit and mounting it next to your HDS. That way, you can use the older unit for mapping/sonar and use your HDS for sonar/sctructure scan. It's cheaper than buying one huge unit and you have a back up as well. Plus, you can connect them with an ethernet cable (if the unit is a recent year model) and share the sonar data.

I think there was a tongue in cheek with the HDS 20 comment. But it would be something to see.
If you wanted to try a LCX unit, you could run the LCX on sonar, with a broadband hooked up, and you would have high def in both the sonar and mapping. Those 3-D map chips are nice. |
