Default Motor Rating

Does anyone know if you can get a boat re-rated for the size of the motor if you put power steering? I want to put a 115 tiller with Titan on my boat that is only rated for a 90. Has anyone every tried to do this? I thought I read on this site that it can be done but I asked my dealer and they said no (but it sounded like they never have asked about it).

The addition of power steering (or steering assist) does not affect the USCG rating system, since the motor is still "tiller controlled". You can contact your hull manufacturer, but it seems unlikely that they'd be willing to re-rate the hull.

I think ratings may change in the future on boats with hydraulic stearing. Look at the link below. The boat is rated for 90-150hp but with 150 you must have the hydraulic steering.

The 115 you're dreaming of will have the same block (displacement) as the 90 you now have, so you won't gain enough performance to make the expense worthwhile. The torque will be almost identical.

Even though the manufacturers currently are getting a "USCG approved rating" for boats with the power assist tiller; due to the liability issues and I believe also USCG regulations, they will not issue a new rating plate for previously manufactured boats.
