I have only used the red ones with the pin. I've never lost one yet to a fish, now, when my kids were younger, there were issues.........nuff said.

I've only used the red ones as well. Seems to me without the pin, you could lose one pretty easily.

We use the red ones (OR-16's). The OR-19's (orange ones) are the same tension as the red ones with no pin.

The orange ones will work since there isn't anything tugging on the snap-weight itself. They should not come off even without the pin.

gotta be careful.... we've even lost some with the pin when you get it above the waterline and the fish thrashes sometimes they get jostled around and ping, lost... not a whole bunch though.

i have some of the old black releases, thinking about manufacturing my own pins out of brass round stock and gluing them in.

Those giant Green Bay Sheephead love to throw the snap weights (even the red ones). I make my own snap weight releases, it's much cheaper than buying them for $4 each. When you run up to 9 rods that starts to add up.

I use the red ones with the pin. I never lost one until last night. I think it was a large cat that dragged me into some snaggy timber. I lost the fish and the snap weight.

Years ago I used the red ones on lake erie and lost them. I quit using them until I got some this year. The new ones have the pin the old ones did not. I did not know they had been changed until I asked a bait shop owner how to keep from looseing them. He explained the pin deal to me. That makes a big difference.

what I did with my old ones is drill a small hole through the top of the snap right through it. Then cut a piece of nylon off of your string trimmer stick it through the hole and epoxy it . Works great.
