On the trip to Lac Suel this year I took a 6' light St. Croix Legend elite and the 6' Medium LE to compare the two for vertical jigging with superline vs. mono and hi - vis vs. low vis line. To complicate matters more my son took his g loomis sjr 721 (a 6' "light" that actually is like a med - light in a croix version), and a fenwick elite tech 6' 9" jig pitchin rod.
All the rods had pflueger supreme reels and we were able to swap and compare 8 lb mono, 6 lb spiderwire stealth, 8 lb stren superbraidd, 8 lb fireline, 10 lb fireline and with one spool of hi - vis mono and hi - vis stren superbraid. While vertical jigging 12 to 20 feet with 1/4 and 3/8 oz jigs I found: I thought the hook up ratio was better with the braid than mono (I know a lot of guys have switched back to mono but I have used so much braid I am used to it and set the hook accordingly) I thought the The hi - vis was nice to fish with and didn't really notice a big difference in hook ratio (water is stained anyway) but for confidence sake I spooled my own with low vis line. I thought all the rods were nice, the Croix light action was fun but a little light for those jigs, the medium was just a hair stiff, the imx was about the right action for that purpose and I was pleasantly surprised how good of a vertical jigging rod the 6' 9" fenwick was (even though it is not made for that specifically). I would give the sensitivity edge to the croix's over the IMX (but not over my GLX's) however the hook up ratio and fish in the boat ratio was better with the IMX. I love testing this stuff. It was a good 4 days with about 200 fish caught, maybe more. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on your own rods. |
