Default 07 175 Optimax

Looking at a boat with an 07 175 hp optimax. It only has about 40 hours on it. Never owned a mercury before. Anyone have any experience with this motor, good or bad, to share?

Default 175 Opti is the small block 2.5L...

...same as the 135 and 150. These motors have proven to be very reliable and smooth running. I have an '02 150 which is the best running large outboard I've ever owned- going back some 40+ years. Take the motor s/n to a dealer and have him run it up on his computer to get a complete history of the particular engine you're considering buying. This will show if the previous owner needed any major repairs- warranty or otherwise.

Bought an '08 Opti 150 last year and put 75 hours on it. Starts like a dream, winds up like a tornado and has instantaneous throttle response. Couple of gotcha's.............don't put the hammer down until it has had time to warm up. Don't know about other DI motors but I have the smartcraft gauges and barely come off idle until the operating temp has increased, and it doesn't take long at all.......usually from the time the motor is started until the bow strap comes off the boat is all it takes. And the other thing, don't expect any Opti to be whisper quiet. They have a nice growl when you are laying on the juice. The 2.5 liter motors have held up very well over the years and I would not hesitate to buy another.

I got a 06 175 Opti w/155 hours. Never any problems, very reliable. I would say that's just about the safest choice in outboard motors!

Default 175 Opti

Just took delivery of my new boat with 175 Pro XS, other than the sound, great motor so far. They are not whisper quiet, like I said in another post they have kind of a clicky noise at low RPM's. My friend who worked at Mercury, a engineer, said its the injectors firing.

Yes, I own a 200 optimax, 07 model. It is bullet proof. I have not had one problem with this mercury since new. Runs good, starts on first turn over. The optimax series is very dependable. Jay

Smile "07" 175 Optimax

I have the exact engine you're talking about. I bought it new in 2007 and it has been a flawless performer for me. I did replace the water pump impeller this season, not because it failed, but because my dealer recommended it. ( about $125)

I have a '06 - 150 Merc Optimax and love it. Had it for about a year now after the previous two owners only put ~30 hours on it. Starts everytime and it pushes my Triton 177 very nice. The growl has grown on me. One of these days I will put the kicker on.
