Smile Cannon Downrigging N.Mn Lake

Spending a day on a glacial lake in Northern Mn.

Using my Cannon MAG 20 TS Downrigger set at 20 ft., 75 ft behind the 8 lbs. ball.

Downrigging is a precision trolling method.

You don't need as much line out

and the quick release and rod popping up is as exciting as a bobber being pulled down.

You have the ability to troll must faster w/ less line out. You are able to troll at any depth efficiently.

For baits we used Rapala Husky Jerk Baits size 10 & a shad rap shallow diver Firetiger size 7.

Walleyes were suspended 28 ft down over 50-60 ft water.

Walleye were aggressive I didn't need to change baits, the bite was hot!

I would recommend down rigging to anyone who wants to put summer walleye in the boat.

Looking forward to out next Cannon Downrigging fishing adventure

Right on Brian!

Would you mind shooting some close up pics of how you have your Cannon's mounted on your rails?

I have a friend who wants to put new Cannon's on his 620 in order to fish Lake Ontario kings but he doesn't want to drill any holes in his boat or mount any type of modular track system at the rear as he wants his riggers further forward and more accessible.

Will your set-up there on the rails accommodate 13# balls? It's kinda the standard here on Lake Ontario these days.

Thanks.

Cheers,
Rangerfisher

Bad move mounting riggers on rails. Might work initially but eventually your going to pull your screws right out. A friend of mine ripped his rails out with a triple rod holder set up let alone a rigger. Riggers and heavy balls put ALOT of strain on where they are mounted. I have 1-2 screws I need to tighten up every so often from my triple Cisco's on my rails as it is i would never think of mounting a rigger on them, if I only fished flat water and ran 6 or 8 pound weights and used them twice a year maybe I would consider it but not for great lakes use with 15 pound weights.
