The companies that make printers are obviously subsidizing the cost, hoping to make it back (and then some) on the replacement ink (kind of like the cell phone carriers subsidizing the cost of new phones, knowing they'll make it back on their two year commitments).
I've heard of some people who buy brand new printers as soon as the ink runs dry - which is very wasteful IMO but these days this can actually sometimes be cheaper than buying a whole set of replacement OEM cartridges.
