In a few weeks I will be doing the winterizaiton of my 175 verado. Its an 08 so its due for its first water pump replacement per owners manual. I thought that I remembered seeing a post or thread somewhere on WC that stated it didnt have to get changed until the water pressure dropped below a ceratin point @idle on the smart craft gauges..?...Any truth to this as I didnt see it inthe owners manual?
The last tim I had my boat out the temp went up to 210 degrees. I could slowly watch the temp go up as we cruised at WOT..Is this an indication that a new water pump may be needed? |

That seems high? I have the engine interface cable hooked up between my etec and Lowrance, so I can see all the engine data on there. I know it doesn't get much past 165 at idle and drops much lower at full throttle, so I would think you are correct in your thought? I know different engine, but it seems that is pretty hot....

...in the cooling system. I've posted previously about changing the impeller on Optis when the water pressure at idle drops down to 1.25 psi- but this is only for Optis. The traditional V-6 Merc 2 cycle cooling system has 2 stages, and the stats only work at low speeds; being bypassed by the cooling poppet valve above 1600- 1800 rpm. I'm not at all familiar with the Verado, but if you used to run in the 150 degree range then I doubt that you have the 2 stage cooling system. There have been complaints from Verado owners about the thermostats becoming clogged with a resulting overheating problem. Most of these are from owners running in salt water who are getting corrosion around the thermostat. Rumor has it that the Verado lower is getting many design changes for 2011, but that doesn't help you with your current problem. I'd suggest getting to a dealer ASAP and have him change the impeller and maybe the entire pump housing if corrosion is present. He can also look up in his shop manual a tell you what the normal temps are supposed to be.

thanks staylor, lots of good info! should the pil temp remain the same weather running wot or idle? At least within a few degrees? |

As an example, I was out muskie trolling with my Opti 150 today. Water temp was 62, and at a 48 mph cruise at 4400 rpm the Opti was at 94 degrees. I let her idle a bit while I got my trolling rods rigged and the temp gage went up to 146 degrees. On the Opti when I was at cruise the cooling bypass poppet was open, at idle its closed and the stats are closed because the motor was only at 94 degrees. After about 30 minutes of trolling at 1000 rpm upstream against a 3 mph current the motor would heat to 165, the stats would open, and it would drop to 156, then it would start heating up again. I moved to another spot and again at 4400 rpm it was down to 94 degrees. The next spot I tried trolling downstream-again at 1000 rpm- water temp was still 62 but now the motor would heat to 169, the stats would open, and temps would drop down to 159, then the motor would heat up again. If the Verado has no cooling bypass poppet and stats about as accurate as my Opti, you could expect a 10-20 degree temp change on any given day at a given water temp after the motor is warmed up.

I agree with staylor that the most likely problem is a blockage and the most likely blockage is at the thermostats. When an impeller gets old and hard, it generally causes problems at low speed and idle. As long as the pressure is good, something has to be restricting water flow.

There is a boat landing about 1/2 mile away. Hopefully I can get it out this week and report back with water pressure, more accurate temps, ect..thanks again! TL out.
