I'm looking to buy a Ranger with a 115hp motor, yet, it's only rated for a 90. The guy has had it like this since he bought it in 2000, and I have to assume insured. I was told that if you called Ranger they might send you an updated HP rating plate if it doesn't have any cracks or is broken....especially after 10 years. Is this true? I'd hate to buy this thing and have insurance or liability issues.
Thanks! |

I can't comment on what Ranger will say or do. But I will say you are asking for serious liability and insurance issues if you decide to buy it. You can't assume the owner had insurance.
Find another boat. Nimstug When you assume you make an *** out of u and me. |

I would be willing to bet from what I have read on past post Ranger is gonna sorry but no.The people there are great people and very helpful so give them a call personally 870-453-2222 and talk to them.Let us know what they say.
I think Nimstug is right on the money with his comment.

Quote:
The rating is determined by the US Coast Guard - why in the world would Ranger (or any boat manufacturer) stick their neck out to defy the official rating of the USCG? To take it further, what weight would it carry? A gov't entity determines the max legal HP limit on the boat and a private company overrides that determination?? Nah - don't think so. You can be stopped on the water by the DNR or local law enforcement and go through a safety check - part of what they do (in addition to fire extinguisher, horn, PFD's appropriately rated, etc) is look at the plate on the boat and compare it to the motor hanging on the back. This is why some folks will "re-sticker" their overlimit motors in an attempt to avoid a ticket. You may be able to get insurance, but only if you lie about the HP rating on the back of the boat. Even if you don't lie and somehow it slips through your insurance will be null/void as soon as the company finds out that the motor was over the max HP for the boat. If the worst happens and you are involved in a incident on the water I can virtually guarantee you that the boat being over the max HP will come into play (if the investigator has any clue whatsoever) and you'll be in a very difficult position...no insurance coverage and willful negligence in the rigging of your boat. If you buy this rig ALL you are getting is insurance and liability issues. The guy will have to sell it outright as no repuatable boat dealer will allow it to be sold on their lot as a complete unit - they may buy it and re-rig. Good luck - find a different boat! Scott |

Ummmm....................I would not touch that one with a 7' 6" Muskie rod!!! I like working for myself and not having to pay someone else the rest of my life (other than the government) and if getting caught with an over rated motor hanging off the transom is one way to make is so I can keep working for myself (and the government),that would be a small price to pay. I understand why someone would want to get a bigger motor......but that is why the ratings are the way they are.

Run away from that deal. But only after you call bs when you talk to him again. Afterall, he is knowingly lying to you in order to sell you his illegaly rig boat. Guys like that should get a little grief in return for trying to take advantage of folks.

I would say that the only way Ranger would do this is if subsequent to that boat being manufactured and shipped to the dealer Ranger re-qualified the hull at a new HP rating. This very situation occurred with a Lund Alaskan I owned and Lund sent me an updated capacity plate. Of course I was the original owner, so that may also make a difference.

I would love to have a 200HP motor on the back of my Ranger Reata 1850, but that is NOT going to happen. It is rated at 175HP and I have an F150 on it.
