Ugly Sticks now have a 5 year warranty. It is a very good warranty, pretty much no matter what happens they will give you a new rod. The rods are so durable that you will likely never need it. I have closed the garage door on one and it didn’t even get a scratch.
I use ugly sticks for techniques that don't require much feel, like trolling with boards, or fishing slip bobbers. I also have one that serves as an excellent dead stick. I would not use them for Jigging. I would spend your $50 on the best graphite rod you can find in that price range. Ugly sticks have a ton of good features and are great for a lot of applications, jigging is not one of them. Just my $.02 |

Are they any good for casting? Do you recommend a rod from cabelas in that price range? Thanks for the input.

If you are looking for an ugly stick for casting or spinning I would stay with the ugly stick light.

There are lots of sales right now on decent graphite rods for $50 and under. Look at the BPS online sale and the Cabelas bargin bin. If you are jigging, an ugly stick won't offer much sensitivity.

The Ugly Stick Lite are a little more sensitive over the standard Ugly Stick rods. I like my 5'9" ML for jigging. Other than that I really like the 6'6" UL for Lindy rigs. The flexible tip on the Ugly Sticks do a great job at loading up for the casts. Depends on how the bite is, I prefer a graphite rod for jigging far more. The baitcasting rods are kind of heavy feel and they work far better for cranking than working walleye jigs.

I wonder how a graphite steelhead rod would work for jigging? I know it is a little longer-not sure exactly.

Too long of a rod and you may not be very comfortable jigging with it. I use the St.Croix Avid Salmon/Steelhead rods and even at 8'6" I don't like to jig with it. It does makes for awesome line pick up on a lindy rig.
