Will a 15 pitch prop get you a higher end speed or are you better off going with a 17 pitch prop? I know one gets you out of the hole quicker, and the other gives you more top end. Thanks

Generally speaking, the highere the pitch of the prop - the higher the top end speed. There are more variables for this than I would care to get into but that is the basic rule of thumb to remember.

What crush said. I like to compare it to the rear gears of a ten speed. The largest 1st speed sprocket is easier to turn but you wont get a lot of speed. The 5th gear sprocket (relating to higher pitch) will make you go faster for the same pedal strokes but its much harder to turn. Once you over prop your motor doesnt have enough power to turn it fast and you lose RPM's.

Sure that big gear give's top end but hit a hill add any weight your legs get pumping hard to keep going until you cant. Drop down in gearing and you can go up that hill slower but at least up it. So if you had hull that weight 100 pounds with 90hp on back running huge 25pitch would be ok and top end fast. Most real boats at 1000 pounds with deep v with same motor run 17pitch to 15pitch. Same calculations with engine gearing + prop+ rpm you can get close to top speed of motor by educated guess. Im curious what guy's in Colorado run that's some extreem altitude
