Default Merc or Yamaha

Looking at a 2011 Ranger Reata 2050, In some areas they push the merc 225 Verado and in other areas they push the Yamaha 225

Since this is a family boat, pull skiers I need a good hole shot ect ect plus I fish bigger waters

Please let me know your thoughts

Don

Both are great motors, but the F225 Yammi is known to be a bit of a pooch out of the hole. The Verado will probably have a better hole shot because it is supercharged. The Yammi is a very dependable motor however. The DFIs will give you good low end torque to get skiiers up, so don't rule them out. I have a Pro XS on my 1850 and am very pleased. On plane in a snap and good mid-range punch.

Different props will help in different situations too.

The Reata 2050 is my dream rig! If I were to buy one it would have a Yamaha on it, preferably the new offshore model. You can take advantage of the new "digital" features much like the Verado. That being said, don't be scared of an F225. Great motor with a proven track record.
Here's my gripe about a Verado. They are taking a small displacement and throwing a blower on it and winding it up to 6400rpm. Also, what happens in the hot lazy summer when it's humid and hot? Motors run lazy, and the Verado will lose a lb or two of boost IMO. A naturally aspirated motor will lose a bit as well but not as much as a boosted motor will.
Both are rated for 87 octane which is nice. Both have a ton of service locations.
It would be best to test drive both, but that is unrealistic sometimes. I would love to be in a side by side drag race with both boats propped right in 85 degree weather!

Good luck.

Regardless of supercharger on the Verado or the new offshore Yammi having better low end, you can't beat the fact that a Merc 225 ProXS or an Etec 225HO are both putting out closer to 250HP! If you want all out performance, those two motors are it, period!!! If you aren't as concerned about the extra and have to go 4 stroke, the Verado has had a good reputation so far. Nothing wrong with Yamaha as far as reliability, but if you are doing watersports, I still think the Verado is going to have the edge on hole shot and low end grunt!!

BW your right. I got the vibe he was looking for a 4 stroke. If I had to choose a two stroke, that Etec 225 ho is hard to beat.

Yes, I really want a four stroke motor, if I need to I can't adjust hole shot with a different prop.

Thanks for helping

You'll have nothing but problems with a Merc. Get the Yamaha, and enjoy the boat.

Boy, thats an educated post.

The Verado will be faster out of the hole and have a higher top end than the F225. The Verado also has power steering, digital throttle and shift and Smartcraft.

Default Availability?

You might want to check on availability for a Yammie right now. My choice would be an Etec all things considered.
