Default Lakemaster acquired by Johnson Outdoors

Just received the official word from Humminbird HQ. The last sentence is particularly exciting!

Racine, Wisconsin, July 11, 2011….Johnson Outdoors Marine Electronics, Inc. today announced it has acquired the assets of Waypoint Technologies, maker of LakeMaster,® the premier brand of high definition electronic lake charts among Northern US anglers. The asset purchase includes Pro Map Technologies, the LakeMaster® proprietary inland water survey techniques and bathymetric data processing technology, providing future exclusivity of an expanded portfolio of LakeMaster® digital maps for Humminbird® fishfinders.

I'd guess its Lowrance that doesn't want a partnership anymore. The HB insiders would love an inside look into the lawrance units and the directions they take on the map side.

They are still making and selling Lowrance and Garmin compatible maps. Those are only available thru dealers or thru dealer's online stores.

Perhaps the rationale is that they figure Lowrance customers may not want to go to and register at Humminbird site to buy stuff??

The way it looks for now is they are still selling them but how about in a year or two will new chips be available? Probably not which is a kick in the nuts for us lowrance customers, I mean this is a big blow to lowrance the way I see it. Too bad because if you ask me the lowrance units have an edge over humminbird especially the way the maps appear on screen compared to a bird.
