Default ? on dog food

We got a new pup back on Memorial day. 7 week old GSP male. I already have a 4 year old female GSP. My question is, trying to keep these two out of each others food is a nightmare. I don't want the new pup eating adult dog food. So if I just let her eat the puppy food is it going to hinder stamina in any way?

No, won`t hurt the female to eat puppy food. And unless your feeding the female a lite food, adult food won`t hurt the puppy ether. Wiredog

We put our 2 bowls of dog food (2 Labs) on opposite ends of the kitchen.

We say the name of the dog invited to a bowl as we set it down.

Then we stand between the bowls as they eat. If one tries to cross to the other bowl before the other dog is finished and walks away from it, we move to stand in front of the offending dog.

Eventually they learned they are not to move to the other dog's bowl until that dog walks away from it. Then they each go to the other's bowl to see if anything was missed.

Only took a few days to get the routine established. It is just a matter of patience and determination on your part.

Default All life stages food

I would recommend an all live stages food. There a several great brands on the market. That way you don't have to worry about what the other dog eats!

I have a young pup as well. I just seperate them at feeding time or the young one goes straight for older dogs food. They both wolf down their food so its not an issue. If my older dog left food in the bowl I would have a bigger problem.

Default Food options & pups

If it were me, I'd make sure the food I fed the pup had little to no wheat, corn or soy. Some dogs develop an alergy to certain ingredients causing problems down the road. Many adult foods contain one or more of these ingredients. That's the only reason to feed seperately. Other nutritional needs are close and only changed by amounts fed. Remember cheap and not too digestible going in...... you know what's coming out.......

How are they gaining access to each other's food?

Feed them, give them a set amount of time to eat. Then take the bowls away. We don't allow our dogs to eat whenever they want.

If you are free feeding each right now. STOP until the puppy is eating adult food (most wait til the pup is 12 mos old to switch). Then, like others have said. Separate them while they eat.
