Pretty much the same ones you use near the surface. Just troll at a similar speed.

Crawler harnesses, spoons or shallow running cranks.

Don't mean to hi-jack the thread, but I too am preparing to get into down-rigger fishing.
My question is what length leads do you guys typically run between the release and the lure? Thanks!

Salmon- Flasher Fly's 5-15 ft with 8-10 most common. spoons 10-20.
walleye 15-30, cranks can be anywhere from 10-50 depending on what your running, diving baits less because they will dive down and away from the ball which helps expecially in clear water, add the cranks dive curve to the depth of where your ball is at. worm harnesses 25-50 I usually don't go any further than 30 on anything or you risk not having a solid hookup or not getting released or noticing you have a dragger. |

Watch the lure with the cannon ball just under the surface. Different bill shapes will need different setbacks. Yes, it's trial and error.

These are my all time favorite to use on riggers for walleye! When I use riggers for walleye(which is not that often) I let out 25-30 ft then put it in the release. Run them along the bottom..
