It seems like right away in the spring and then late in the year if I haven't used my boat for awhile I will be out pulling cranks with the big motor all of a sudden the oil light and buzzer will come on.
I shut the engine off then, restart, and no isues. Any ideas what would be making this buzzer go off? The motor starts and runs great. It maybe happened once in the spring and it just happened once this weekend now agai The motor is a 2006. It happened 2 times last year as well once in the spring and once late in the fall as well. Nearest shop is 100 miles a way but it is such a sporadic event that I hate to run it in when it very seldom happens. |

I hate to ask this question, but are you running the same crankcase oil that you have used all summer. It is a possiblity that you have a slight amount of fuel dilution causing your oil to thin out. That would cause a reduction of oil pressure and set off that light. That would be the cheap fix. You did not indicate when you change your oil, would have to know that to address the spring issue. Now the bad news you could have a main or connecting rob bearing thats wiped and that gets spendy. If a bearing is wiped it's really hard to maintaine oil pressure at low RPMs. If you change your oil in early summer and run for a while with the old oil that would explain the low oil pressure during the early spring trips. One other thing is that an outboard will run warmer at idle then at a higher throttle setting. Sounds back wards but you have a greater water flow at higher rpms so the engine will actully run cooler. As the engine temp goes up the oil thins and requires more rpm to maintaine pressure. Since Yamaha has a 100 hour change interval it's not our of the question to go a couple of seasons without changing oil. When you change oil and at what intervals is a hotly debated topic on this board.

I change the oil every fall after my last outing along with changing the lower unit oil. I change the oil mainly because I crank alot with the big motor and heard it can "make oil"
I was thinking in the spring it might have something to do with the gas or water in it from the previous fall. Does that Oil pressure light w/ buzzer signal anything else like water in the fuel or anything? My buzzer/light is by the throttle handle on mine. no lights/dummy gauges on the dash. I did crank all summer long with no issues along with waterskiiing and tubing and such. |

This is going to sound goofy but how low can you get the idle down when your pulling plugs. I think the oil issue is ruled out since you change it like you do. There is no water in the fuel that i am aware of in that moter. You could be dropping the idle down so far that the oil pressure is very low. One other thing is that may be the sensor that sets the light off is out of setting. That woul be a cheap fix. Have you ever tried to rev up the engine when that light a buzzer goes off. And if you have wnat were the results.

I did give it throttle and it did speed up when it did it this spring but the buzzer stayed on, so stopped and shut the motor off, restarted and no issues untill this weekend. Didn't go into limp mode or anything that time I sped up. THen I shut it off, restart and no issues for a couple months. I'm not sure of the rpms but they do go a little lower when I hit the spot right before neutral. goes from 2.8mph to 2.5mph when I hit that sweet spot. Does this motor show codes and such if I were to take it in to the dealer or is that for only the newer motors?

I don't know if that would set a code. Sounds to me that you have an electrcial issue rather than a oil or lube issue.A dealer should be able to check the oil pressure at idle and higher engine speeds. That should qualify that oil pressure sensor.
