I am purchasing a boat with one 1197 on the console and I want to put another big unit on the bow. My options are to put a 1158 up front or get a 1198 for the console and move the 1197 to the bow. My questions are
What is the advantage of a 1197/1198 combo Vs a 1197/1158 combo? My main concern is being able to run the downfire from the bow.

Ideally you would want to put an 1198 at the helm and sell the 1197 and buy an 1158 with the money from the sale. The XXX8 series can ethernet together while you need an interlink to connect an XXX7 to an XXX8. I am not impressed with the interlink system.

With a 1198/1158 combo will I be able to read the DI (from the SI/DI transducer on the rear of the boat) on the front graph? I am not interested in looking at SI from the front.

I am not sure. Jason Halfen could answer that. I'm not sure what the ethernet connection will allow.

If you search FAQ's on humminbirds site, you will find the complete matrix of compatible units.
Here is the link. http://www.humminbird.com/FAQ.aspx?ContentId=3115 It looks like only 2d sonar will share. I have an 898si on the bow. Next purchase is an 1198 for my console. Good luck. Nick |

Thanks for that link. It looks like a 1197/1198 combo is the way to go.

Have you considered one of the new 1158DI units for the bow?
The 1158DI won the "best of show" award in the electronics category this year at ICAST. That's how I've decided to upgrade my bow electronics for 2012....moving from my current 858 to an 1158DI. I plan to mount the new DI transducer (not nearly as big as the HDSI transducer) on the Terrova to provide me with DI images from the bow position. I will also network the 1158DI to the 1198 at the console to be able to share 2D sonar from the HDSI transducer at the transom, as well as navigation information. Ideally that would be the way to go, using that transducer to see right under the bow, but I really do not like the extra wires on the trolling motor.

John, this extra wire can be installed VERY cleanly on a Terrova without loose, floppy wires running all over the place. Check out the images here; this is how I'll be running the DI ducer for the 1158DI:

Took less than a half an hour all inclusive and that included installing a transducer shield. I can get you pictures if you need them.
