Just wanted to ask what type of hook removers works the best when they swallow the hook. I was looking at the type of one but never used one before.

D,
That one works well.
The idea of having a slim cylinder to get to the hook with a gripper at the end is exactly what is needed to safely disgorge a hook from the internal body of a fish with minimum damage.

If you use any sort of needle nose or hemostat, the issue is with the size of the jaws that go down the throat and tear up the fish.

Take care

Default Hook remover

I bought a Baker 13 " model last year. ( very similar to yours)
My only complaint is it's Black and pretty tough to see the end when pulling crankbaits out at night. Thinking about trying to polish off the anodizing ............

Outdoor,
Get a better and brighter headlamp.
If you have a bright headlamp that is well adjusted, it should be a non issue to see well into the mouth of the fish.

p.s.
You could even paint the end of the hook out with glow in the dark powder paint. Just pain the end of the retriever as if you were going to paint a jig.

Before you paint the hook out, put something between the jaws to take the paint. That way, the jaws themselves will not get coated with paint.

I use a long needle nose pliers. I enter thru the gills. I grap the hook at the bend and rotate it out.

Just be careful with the gills.

Great question. "THE BEST" fish hook removal tool out there is this one right here. You don't even have to touch the fish. You just hold onto the line and pull the trigger. It doesn't matter if the hook is in the fish's stomach, with a pull of the trigger it will rotate the hook out of the flesh and turn it around so the hook comes out point backwards. You will not find a better hook removal tool, I guarantee it.

I'm no expert and surely not a surgeon but I believe that if you plan on using any of the so called "tools" that claim to safely remove hooks from a gut hooked fish I suggest that you use a fillet knife and pick up some fries because either way that fish is going to die....might as well eat it.

It will remove the hook but you are right, if the hook is in the gut, the fish will most likely die anyway. No one can guarantee that the fish will live but this will do the least amount of damage to a fish if the hook is deep down the fish's throat. I would rank this fish hook remover up there with sliced bread and the ipilot.
