Barking Dogs

I am Looking for help. I have a kennel facility attached to my boat shed with indoor sleeping kennels and 4 fenced outside dog runs . I have had all 4 runs with dogs in them . I have neighbors on 2 sides of my kennels that are complaining about my dogs barking . Both neighbors are separated from view each side by a thick row of cedars. I have purchased a ultra sonic device that senses vibration and then emits a high pitched ultra sonic squeal . I have had it several months and it does not work . I then purchased the shock type collars for all 4 dogs . They did not work either. I had the one dog barked until it burnt 2 holes in his neck. I then felt terrible so I sold the dog that was a constant chronic barker . Our development has no noise restrictions nor does the County. We are considered a rural area . I have had one visit by the Sheriffs Dept that was investigating a anonymous complaint . The Deputy was very nice and said he had no jurisdiction. The one set of neighbors are renters and have told the Landlord that they are terminating their lease and are moving out due to the barking ( they have 2 yapping beagles in their back yard ). I don't feel at all sorry for them. Hopefully when they leave it will help reduce the aggrivation to my dogs. My dogs are the only ones in entire development that are not allowed to run free . There are 20+ dogs running loose in the development and they all have been outside my pens making my dogs bark. The neighbors on the other side do not have a dog and are the anonymous complainers. They have a young daughter that they say is sensitive to the noise . My house is across the street and far enough away from the kennels that I cannot hear my dogs bark. I would try an air horn or water hose but again I can't hear them . I want to be a good neighbor. Any thing else I could try . It seems harsh to have their vocal cut . I don't know what it would cost .

I've been in your situation. I had a German Wire hair pointer that barked non stop. I had a bark collar with a regular shock collar on him at the same time. Nothing worked. He didn't like the garden hose so I set up a sprinkler in his kennel, he stayed in his dog house and continued to bark. I've never hated anything or anyone as bad as I hated that dog. I finally gave him away. We've moved since then and now my neighbor has a barking dog. I think dogs that bark all day long have a nervous or mental disorder that can only be controlled with drugs.

Just wondering what brand of bark collar you bought that would burn a hole in a dogs neck. I have shock collars and nothing on the market that I know of has enough power to burn a hole. I know that you are not suppose to leave the collar on a dog all the time and that if you do it can cause sores.

Incessantly barking dogs are a menace to peace. I'm pretty sensitive to your complaining neighbors here. I had a neighbor across the street from me that had a dog that would bark all night long. I talked to her about it, but somehow she couldn't hear it so did nothing about it. For 7 years that dog interfered with my sleep and therefore my life. I got in the habit of leaving the TV on at night so I wouldn't notice the barking so much. It helped, but man I have to say that my sanity was being challenged. I never called the authorities because I didn't want to cause tension with the neighbor. About a year ago that neighbor moved and took her yapping dog with her. It's amazing how much better life is if you can get a good night's sleep. If someone stood by your bed and poked you with a stick every time you were about to fall asleep you wouldn't like it. I'd be willing to bet you would even get angry...very angry.

First I'll suggest you contact a dog behavior specialist...somebody like Cesar Milan. If they are barking all the time it seems there is something not right about their mental state. Cutting their vocal chords doesn't fix that. If that doesn't work get rid of the dogs. If you don't want to get rid of the dogs buy some acreage and move to the country...or enclose your kennels with soundproof material.

I probably should not have used the word burned . I would say that the spots were very irritated and sore from a combination of use and duration of having it on .

As I stated in my original post I have sold the 1 dog that was the chronic barker and 1 other and I think situation is better. I just built a brand new home with a beautiful lake view location to pursue my 1st passion for walleye fishing and I do not see myself selling and moving . My old house was a 1/2 mile from the nearest neighbor. The problem with barking is during the day when I am work. The one remaining neighbor that has a complaint has all of their neighbors on all sides having dogs . As I said in my original post all of the other dogs run loose in the development . Has anybody had any experience with any kind of muzzle that the dog could still get a drink but inhibit the ability to bark ?

Kennel dogs bark!! thats the way it is. They are bored and want to be with you. Turn them into house dogs and the barking will stop. You can`t teach a kennel dog not to bark, they will only not bark when the need is gone and or they are involved in something that keeps their intrest. Also altering their voice box doesn`t hurt them. They still can bark and make noise, BUT very few vets can do it right. Most won`t or shouldnt do it because it takes equipment that most don`t have. My neighbors German Sheppard is a night time house dog, during the day he stays outdoors in a very large fenced yard. I can't hear the dog bark after dark but he never stops barking during the day. He's not barking to get back in the house, he's barking at everything that moves or any sound he hears. The dog appears to be a nervous wreck.

Wiredog nailed it. Make house dogs out of them or get rid of them. I kenneled my lab at my brothers for a week and his dogs were swaying my well behaved dog to "the dark side". My dog, when by himself, in his outside kennel, does not bark. He is only out there three or four times a week for different reasons. Usually two to four hours while we shop or go out for dinner.

I found a simple no bark strap system that keeps them from being able to raise their head to bark. Cheap ,simple and effective. They can eat, drink etc with the system . There is a velcro strap that run's behind the ears that is connected to via a short strap to a strap around the muzzle under the eyes. they seem to be well adjust to them
