Default Removing numbers on ranger hull

Is there a certain temperature I should wait for to remove boat numbers from my new to me ranger 619? I've heard 60 degrees but wanted to ask. I'm going to use a heat gun but didn't want to screw up paint/gelcoat.

Supposed to get to 60 today

Any imput would be helpful

I would try a hair dryer first. Just me but it may work and you have to be so careful with heat guns. Last year mine actually came off easy.

Do you have a variable temp. Heat gun? I set mine at 200F with no problems. Surface of a dark hull probably gets nearly that hot on a warm summer day in the sun. If your gun isn't variable temp. a hair dryer may be a better option.
When pulling on the decals I've had best luck by pulling horizontal back over the number rather than pulling straight away from the hull, decals don't tear as much. If you get 60F and direct sun you may not need a heat source. Best of luck to you.

Walleye,
Take the decals off at any temperature that you want.

Just use a heat gun to heat the decals and peel them off.

I just put the heat gun on maximum heat and then just adjust the distance and time of heat on the hull to get the decals to the necessary temperature to peel off.

Just start on one edge of the decal - heating the surface of the decal in the general area. As soon as you can get a fingernail under one edge, you can begin to work the decal off of the hull. As soon, as you get a bit peeled back, then concentrate on the heat between the hull and the decal, pointing the heat toward the decal. It will be off in a few seconds.

Then, go over the area with wd-40 or mineral spirits to remove any trace of the adhesive.

Then, go over the area with windex to remove any trace of the mineral spirits and you will be ready to go or to put something different on the area.

The hull of your boat is a huge heat sink, so unless you have the heat gun about a 1/2 inch away from the hull, and you leave it there for 15 minutes or so, there won't be any issue with the gel coat or fiberglass.

Good luck and smooth sailing.

REW

I took mime off last week and used a hair dryer and it worked great. I have a bay boat though, so can't guarentee anything on the gel coat

No need for any heat when applying decals.

REW I think Ned meant temp outside. As in , don't put decals on when its 10 degrees.
