I have always wondered that too. I just like to have enough material for the screws to get a good bite, to hold that transducer bracket if you ever do hit a stump, tree top, or something. Most of those boards are only about 3/8in. The mounting plates do cost more compared to the cutting board, but to each his own.

Fleet Farm has theirs $5 less than Cabelas. Also saw some if you google "transducer mounting plate" down to $11- most add shipping.

My Dad's a carpenter, so I had him glue two together to get the bulk I needed and then cut and router it to the shape I needed. Easier than ordering from a marine store at the time.

If you are worried about the thickness of one cutting board, put two of them together.

Yup. You really don't even need to glue them together. They're not going anywhere once everything is screwed down. Just remember to silicone the holes for the screws going into the transom.

If you want to glue them together just hit them with sandpaper and use PVC cement after that cut to size.

I used a scrap piece of composite deck board, spray painted it black, stainless steel screws and silicone sealer around the edges and screw holes. About an inch thick, made for outdoor 4-season use. It's been on my boat for two years and no sign of problems yet.
